The Culinary Spectacle of the Year

by Jerry on November 27, 2009

Thanksgiving is over now except for the turkey sandwiches and the rigors of losing all the weight I gained in one meal. When there are so many delicacies, even a sample of each is too much. And I took more than a sample of the turkey and stuffing! Remember that old Bugs Bunny cartoon where the Tazmanian Devil swallowed an inflatable life raft and Bugs pulled the cord to inflate it? That’s close to how I felt. So, this morning, I ate almost nothing. I think I need to do that a few more times to even the score. Mildred made the apple pie, the turkey, gravy, stuffing, and a few other of her amazing concoctions that I can’t stop eating. Emily and Karen each contributed several wonderful dishes too. Anyway, as we sat picking our teeth around the table and trying to figure out how to eat just a little more turkey, or mashed potato, or sweet potato, pumpkin pie, or corn casserole, or something, I suggested to our guests that maybe now they could see why it is so hard for me to keep the weight off having married such an amazing cook. I’m not sure if their sympathy was sincere, but they claimed to feel for me.

One of the special highlights of the meal was having Romel and Iris Hernandez with us along with their two daughters and Romel’s younger sister, who lives with them. If you didn’t already know it, Romel is our Spanish announcer and is a terrific guy. It was fun to practice our Spanish with them. Travis impressed me with his Spanish skills as he explained to Romel and Iris how Thanksgiving came to be. The meal was a rousing success and the Hondurans loved the new taste experiences.

We have been blessed lately with a stretch where we have not had many technical malfunctions. It seems like, in this salty environment, things usually break faster than we can fix them. On top of that, there is a spiritual resistance that seems to manifest itself in strange software and hardware malfunctions. For example, today someone tried to adjust the volume of the speaker in the office ceiling. The nearly new volume control was mechanically frozen and, long story short, the shaft broke right off. It was impossible to turn it. I don’t remember ever seeing anything like that. It doesn’t affect our broadcasts, but it’s just one more thing to fix. Oh well.

Tomorrow is a big day here – or at least it should be if everything goes as planned. Peter and Sandi are due back here at about 3:20 in the afternoon. It is going to be great to have them back again. I hope you will pray for their timely arrival with all their luggage. We’ve been busy with them gone, so we’re thinking about letting them discover on their own what all improvements happened during their absence.

It looks like rainy season is well and truly here. I think the cruise ships bring it. During dust season, we have about three ships per week. During mud season we have as many as eleven. I wonder how they made it rain before cruise ships started coming here. ;-) The other day, we had two of them and one was right out here in front of our house. It was kind of funny the way I discovered it. I had left the house, where I was writing some radio scripts, to go over to the children’s home next door to do someone a favor. When I came back out of the children’s home and headed back home, which would be walking toward the sea, I saw what looked like a giant hotel looming over our house. So I had to go get my camera before I could get back to work. It wasn’t raining at the time and I didn’t think I would get a better opportunity to capture a view like that.

I guess that’s it for this week. Nothing profound or significant. We are just grateful that the Lord has invited us to be part of His work here and that so many of you are helping with prayers and financial support. See ya next time.

I sure enjoy reading your blogs. They are refreshing and its just like sitting there talking with the two of you. It’s the next best thing to being there or ya’ll here. Glad to hear you had a delightful Thanksgiving. It was nice that you all could be together. Sounds like the only thing missing was the football game — you didn’t miss much.
