We had a bit of a gap in our week here. Mildred and I took a ride on the Galaxy, aka the Vomit Comet, over to La Ceiba on Wednesday to get some medical tests done and also some shopping. As you will see, it was a good thing we planned to make it an overnight trip.
Things started well with a smooth trip over to the coast. We took a taxi to the lab where Mildred was to have her test and then I walked the few blocks to where I would have an MRI done on my ailing right shoulder. I have to tell you that 20 minutes inside a very loud tube about six inches wider than I am, motionless, flat on my back, is a really long 20 minutes. But they got what look like nice, clear pictures, some of which have circles drawn on them. I guess I need to wait till I see the orthopedic doctor to find out what the circles indicate. Hopefully, nothing that will need surgery.
When I got done, Mildred was waiting for her results. I went back to join her and then we went together back to the medical center where I’d had my MRI so she could get a bone density scan. (Yup, we’re gettin’ old!) Under a great big sign that listed, among other things, “Densitometria Osea,” two receptionists and a technician insisted that they don’t do bone density scans there. They recommended another location. Needing some exercise, we trekked the mile or two over to the other clinic and found that, yes indeed, they do the scans. But since Mildred had taken a calcium tablet that morning, we had to wait till the next day to have the test done. Never heard of that! But they were adamant, so we spent the rest of the day shopping for personal and radio station items. It wasn’t that big of a deal since we’d planned for a two-day trip anyway.
We also went to visit with one of our listeners who lives in the downtown area. Miss Una (pronounced Yoona) is originally from Roatán, but lived most of her adult life in the U.S. When she retired, she came back to Honduras, but lives over on the coast. She loves to listen to Radio HRGS and told us about some of her favorite programs and songs.
We spent the night in a relatively nice hotel in the downtown area and then resumed our shopping on Thursday morning. Late in the morning we went back to the clinic to get Mildred’s bone density scan. While I waited in the reception area for her, one of our listeners from over on Utila, Frank Morgan, came in with his sister so she could get some testing done. Frank and I had a nice chat while Mildred was in the lab. Frank said he really wants to get over here to Roatán sometime to visit the station. He and his wife Lisa are enthusiastic listeners. In fact, if you want to hear what she thinks, just listen to this week’s HRGS Audio Update which is at the bottom of this page.
After Mildred’s test, we did a little radio station business at the bank and then went to the mall for lunch at Wendy’s. After lunch, we went to visit another listener, Miss Nora. She is also a former islander living in La Ceiba. We had a great talk and then headed back to the clinic to retrieve Mildred’s test results. From there, we headed to Kentucky Fried Chicken and got two buckets of just chicken to go – one original for us and one extra crispy for the Mittens.
We went directly from KFC (known locally as simply “Kentucky”) to the Galaxy for the ride home, where we received the anticipated razzing from the security people when we passed the chicken through the x-ray machine. The ride back was not the worst I’ve had, but it was definitely in the top five or six. I just managed to retain my lunch, unlike many other travelers. Mildred, on the other hand, could be a fighter pilot. The only reason she put away the book she was reading was because the the salt water spray kept coming around the side and getting it wet. Sandi Silseth, who gets even sicker than I do, agrees with me that that is just totally unfair.
So that’s our trip in a nutshell. I shot lots of video and I hope I can put it together to share with you soon, especially the gorgeous rainbow against the mountains. In the meantime, here’s the audio update for your listening pleasure.
