Many years ago I received one of my very favorite belated birthday cards. It told the story of someone who made a gigantic birthday cake for a friend, but it was so heavy he couldn’t carry it. So he got a cart and tried to use a big lever to get the cake into the cart. But the cake was just too heavy, fragile, and unwieldy for that. Finally, he asked his friend Nate to help. Since Nate was about the size of a locomotive, he easily placed the cake into the cart. What’s the moral of the story? Better Nate than lever.
Just out of curiosity, I Googled the phrase “better Nate than lever” and discovered that the same punch line is used to bring a long overdue conclusion to a story reputed to be the longest joke in the world. I read a little bit of it, but decided there was no way it would be worth reading over 11,000 words just to get to the end of it – especially when I already knew how it ended! But if you’ve finished watching paint dry and you’re still bored then, after you listen to the HRGS Audio Update, you can read about the man lost in the desert at http://www.innocentenglish.com/best-funny-jokes/longest-joke-ever.html. Be forewarned, though. I will not be responsible for helping you to recover the chunk of your life you’ll be throwing away if you read the whole thing.
All that is to say that I’m pretty late with the Audio Update this week, but there’s a very good excuse this time. Our internet was down for a day and a half. We just got it going this morning and now I’m playing catch up on email and stuff like that. So, now that the emails are squared away, I can get this update ready for you.
As always, we had some fun with this one. I tried to record it on video because I thought some people might like to see the studios. But I only had one camera and it was impossible to find a place from which all three of us were visible. Perhaps Peter can bring his video camera next week and we can do a two-camera shoot. That sounds like fun. For this week, though, we’re stuck with just audio again.
Here is a little review of last week, the plans for this week, some great news on our so-called “dual language project,” and some encouraging words from a couple of our listeners.
