So far, the vacation has gone pretty well. Besides spending time with family, we’ve been relaxing and shopping. Probably more shopping than relaxing, but at least the shopping is mostly done now. Even though Roatán is much better than it used to be as far as finding items we need for household, work, and clothing, there are still a lot of things you just can’t get there. Or else they are prohibitively expensive.
The flight from Roatán to Houston was smooth and on time. Mildred’s sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Mark, met us at the airport and away we went. Mark had to fly to Canada for work the next day, so we haven’t seen much of him yet.
I had ordered a new laptop, which I needed for work and it was waiting for me at Mark and Cheryl’s place when we got there. It is every bit as good as the reviews said it was before I bought it. In fact, I’m using it now for this blog entry.
On Tuesday, I helped Cheryl and her handyman put up some fencing for the dogs, so I haven’t been a total couch potato. But we’ve still been doing a lot of relaxing.
Our trip from Houston to Ohio went pretty well. Once again, we got all our luggage, and we were not very late at all. So, like the land crab said half way across the road, “So far, so good.” Mildred, Cheryl, and I got to the farm just in time for supper.
Today, we are just taking it easy. Cheryl’s son, Matt, flies in tonight and then a little later our Jesse and Kristin come into Columbus. So I’m planning to drive down there after supper and haul them up here to the farm. Mildred’s brother John and his wife Linda live nearby, so they are already here. Mark and their daughter Amy fly in Saturday, and then we will have the whole clan together for the big 60th wedding anniversary.
The anniversary celebration was the original reason for the trip. Initially, Mildred was going to come alone and I was going to stay in Roatán because there is just so much to do. But Peter told me that I should not only go, but we should take our whole three weeks of vacation while we are at it. What a guy! Being a task-oriented sort of person, I was a little reluctant to make this trip, but I guess I needed it. I usually have a hard time relaxing when there is such a back log of work. But I must have needed this. I’ve been doing some industrial grade sleeping and have not yet grown tired of being mostly idle. I just hope I don’t get used to it!
So here we are, enjoying a little rain and some wonderful temperatures in the 60′s. (Did someone say “global warming?”) We are supposed to have a family get together Friday night at the local country club. Then Saturday afternoon there is a big open house at the church. We are expecting quite a throng. Mildred’s parents are wonderful people with tons of friends. If their character isn’t enough, there is also the fact that Mildred’s dad used to be a farm implement dealer, so he knows practically every farmer in the county – and he used to serve on the school board, so that has led to another group of friends. They are active in their church and in several civic organizations, so God has given them a lot of influence in a lot of lives.
I’ll try to make a post after the celebration with some pictures. But for now, here are a few shots of the rural beauty at Mildred’s sister’s house near Houston.
